Singapore does the year-end better than almost anywhere in Asia, and it does it for free. From early November, when Little India lights up for Deepavali, through the Orchard Road Christmas light-up, the Gardens by the Bay Christmas market and the New Year's Eve countdown at Marina Bay, there are roughly eight weeks where the whole city becomes a date.
This guide covers the entire run, from Deepavali to New Year's Day, with ideas sorted by budget and by what kind of couple you are. If you are planning a first date rather than a date night, our first date ideas guide is the better starting point; everything below assumes two people who already like each other.

Free and nearly free
Singapore's best year-end dates cost nothing, which is the right price for a season that already costs plenty.
1. The Orchard Road light-up walk. Start at Tanglin, walk the full stretch to Dhoby Ghaut, stop for a drink halfway. Go on a weeknight after 9pm; weekends are shoulder-to-shoulder and the magic evaporates.
2. Deepavali in Little India. The light-up on Serangoon Road and the bazaar around Campbell Lane run for several weeks around the festival in early November. Go hungry; a food crawl here is one of the best S$20 evenings in the city.
3. Gardens by the Bay after dark, outer gardens. The free zones are lit year-round, and in December the whole bay glows. Pair with the light-up at Marina Bay Sands' waterfront promenade.
4. Christmas carols at a church or cathedral. Many hold public carol services in December and welcome visitors regardless of faith. Quiet, candlelit, and an hour long.
5. Watching the countdown from the Esplanade or Merlion Park. Free, crowded, memorable. Arrive by 9pm with snacks, leave together through the crowd, and accept that the MRT home will be a shared adventure.
6. A year-end review walk. Pick a long route, East Coast or the Southern Ridges, and spend it talking about the year that was and the one coming. No cost, surprisingly intimate.
Under S$50
7. The Christmas market at Gardens by the Bay. The annual festive village with lights, food stalls and rides. Entry is modest and the atmosphere is worth it, particularly on a weeknight.
8. A hawker Christmas dinner. Skip the hotel buffet entirely. Satay, chilli crab or a zi char feast for two at a hawker centre is festive in the only way that matters and a fraction of the price.
9. A festive market crawl. Dempsey, Holland Village and the various pop-up markets around town run Christmas weekends with food, crafts and music.
10. Ice cream and lights. The simplest December date in Singapore: a cone or a dessert bar, then a walk under whatever is lit up nearest you.
11. A Christmas film at the cinema, then supper. Reliable, air-conditioned, and the supper is where the date actually happens.
12. Picnic by the bay. Supermarket cheese, fruit and drinks at Marina Barrage or the Esplanade rooftop, with the skyline doing the decorating.
S$50 to S$150
13. A proper Christmas Eve dinner. Book early; the good restaurants fill by late November. Our best date restaurants by region sorts the options by where you live, which matters when the whole island is trying to get a table at the same time.
14. Hotel afternoon tea, festive edition. Most major hotels run a Christmas afternoon tea in December. Unhurried, indoors, and a good alternative to a crowded dinner.
15. A cocktail class or cooking class with a festive menu. A high-return date at any time of year, and December classes often build around seasonal menus.
16. Rooftop drinks at blue hour. The skyline in December is lit for the season. One drink, timed for sunset, then move on. More picks in our best date spots by vibe.
17. The Singapore Flyer at night. Touristy, but the view of the countdown-ready bay in late December is the best in the city.
Splurge
18. A countdown dinner with a view. Restaurants and rooftop bars around Marina Bay run New Year's Eve packages with fireworks views. Expensive, booked months ahead, and worth it once.
19. A year-end staycation. The default Singapore splurge for good reason: it removes the domestic context entirely. Book a hotel near the bay, watch the countdown from the room or the pool deck.
20. A short trip. Bintan, Batam or a long weekend in Malaysia. The region empties into Singapore for the holidays and Singapore empties out, and both directions are a good date.
For the two of you specifically
Couples who hate crowds. Avoid Orchard and Marina Bay entirely on 24, 25 and 31 December. Do a neighbourhood Christmas instead: a long dinner in Tiong Bahru or Katong, a walk, home by eleven. Our Tiong Bahru guide and Katong and Joo Chiat guide both work perfectly in December.
Couples with different faiths or traditions. Singapore's year-end has room for all of it. Deepavali in November, Christmas in December, and for many families the New Year is the bigger celebration anyway. Build your own calendar from the pieces that matter to each of you, and go to the other person's thing with genuine curiosity.
Long-distance couples reuniting for the holidays. Keep the first evening simple and local. The reunion is the event; the venue should not compete with it.
New couples, first festive season together. The first Christmas is a soft milestone, and the pressure to make it perfect is where it goes wrong. Pick one lights walk and one dinner, and let the rest be ordinary. Our date night ideas by occasion covers the full year once you are through this one.
Budget-conscious couples. The free list above is the best part of the season, not the consolation prize. Save the money for a January trip when prices drop.
The practical bit
Book dinners by mid-November. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve tables at the good places vanish early, and the ones left on 20 December are left for a reason.
Weeknights beat weekends for every light-up. Same lights, a third of the people.
Plan the journey home for the countdown. The MRT runs late on 31 December but the crowds at Bayfront and Raffles Place are intense. Walking to a station further out, or taking a long walk home along the river, is usually the better end to the night.
December rain is real. The monsoon season means afternoon and evening downpours are likely. Keep one indoor option in reserve for every outdoor plan. The rainy-day section of our date night guide has the standbys.
If you are reading this single
The year-end is the loneliest stretch of the calendar for a lot of people and the most social for everyone else, and both are true at once. Two things worth knowing. First, December is one of the busiest months for singles events in Singapore, because the organisers know exactly what the season does to people; the singles events guide covers what is on. Second, the people who meet someone in January usually started in December. Creating a free profile on SingCupid takes a minute, members browse by region so you meet people near you, and everyone states what they are looking for up front. The lights will still be on.
